What is the Tea Board of India?

The Tea Board of India is a statutory body under the Government of India, established under the Tea Act, 1953 and formally constituted on 1 April 1954. It operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, with its head office in Kolkata and zonal offices at Jorhat (Assam) and Coonoor (Tamil Nadu). What does the Tea Board do?

• Regulation — it oversees producers, manufacturers, exporters, brokers and auction houses through control orders issued under the Tea Act.
• Quality & research — it supports research and development to improve tea quality and productivity.

Darjeeling: India's first Geographical Indication

The Tea Board's most famous act of protection is the Darjeeling GI. In October 2004, Darjeeling tea became the first product in India to receive a Geographical Indication under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. The Tea Board of India is the registered proprietor of that GI.

In practice, this means the words "Darjeeling Tea" — and the distinctive Darjeeling logo of a woman holding a tea leaf — can legally be used only for tea genuinely grown and processed within the defined Darjeeling district. It is the same principle that protects Champagne or Parmigiano-Reggiano, applied to the finest tea in the Himalaya.
